A page refresh may be required. Now, this isn't anything innovative. I'm just copying Facebook here, where the 'Like' option is a bit more expansive. However, I've added a "Dislike" option to the rest of their defaults, because as it goes, there is a Like and Love, there should be a Dislike and Hate(Angry).

This isn't a culture where people can only express positive feelings. If you don't like something, you should feel free to express your disinterest.
There were many dependencies I had to change, so I've likely overlooked a few small details, and I haven't updated functionality for the alternate skins yet. If you notice issues, let me know.

In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)

I've heard mixed things about this Netflix original movie back when it came out, so I was hesitant to watch it. It's from a decent director Jim Mickle who did Stake Land (okay at best) and the gritty Cold in July which I thought was a cool movie. Why the hell did I pass up a movie starring Michael C. Hall? Was I retarded or something? You're damn right I was!

So this here is a movie I wont go into too much detail about because the twists are what make it a great experience. The story starts off with Locke (Boyd Holbrooke) as a beat cop in 1988 who gets roped into a series of bizarre coincidental deaths. He investigates this shit with his partner Maddox and mild cooperation of his detective brother-in-law Holt (Michael C. Hall). It gets weird very quick, but the aftermath of this whole investigation lingers for years to come, driving Locke a bit crazy as he obsesses about it for quite some time.

For those who have seen this movie, it bears a strong similarity to two other movies I really loved: The Terminator, and Predestination. Solid, engaging, and an absolute mindfuck.

Sea Monster Movies

Sea-ing how this month's challenge revolves around them, what are some of your recommendations? It didn't take me long to realize that I don't know many movies that fit this criteria, but I'm sure we can figure out a few. Include lake monster movies too, because those count.


My personal favorite is Humanoids from the Deep (1980), which is short and gives you plenty of kills. If you can count kills that weren't from the monsters, you'd have even more deaths. This movie is balls to the wall.

I suppose a big one is Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) and its two sequels. He was the last of the classic Universal monsters. My personal favorite is the second movie.

I recently watched Leviathan (1989), which was like an underwater version of The Thing. If you want some garbage movies, there's Devil Fish (1984), Creatures from the Abyss (1994), and Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961).


There are literally a million shark movies and an ass-load of alligator/crocodile movies, if those count. They're real creatures, so I'm not sure if they count as "monsters". Do they need to be mutated or genetically modified? Do the piranha movies count, since the remake marks them as prehistoric savages?

Killer Joe and Texas Chainsaw Massacre

This is a great little story set in Texas about an insurance scam that you know right away wont end well. Just in like TCM4, McConaughey plays a fucking creep, and it does it wonderfully. Not that Vilmer and Joe are very similar, because Vilmer was an erratic mess, but Joe is calm and collected. Of course, he still goes off the deep end when someone pushes him, but he's very particular about his routines. Hell, he even threatens to wear someone's face. And then, like any chainsaw movie, there's a dinner table scene where it all goes south.

I really like Killer Joe. It's one of those gritty deep-fried crime dramas that feature a lot of rednecks, incestuous vibes, and violence. I also want to say that the character of Ansel played by Thomas Hayden Church is a great, laid-back hick who goes along with everything. He amuses me, but everyone does good in the movie.

Emile Hirsch kind of always looks like a piece of shit, what with his facial hair and whatnot, but he's been in some good movies. Then, you have Juno Temple playing Dottie, who's in her 20s playing a 12 year old that everyone looks at sexually. Uh oh. 🤔 Of course, this plays a big part in the storyline, but it still makes us all inherently uncomfortable. Gina Gershon is good too, playing a sleazy broad who we never quite trust. Because of her, you may never look at fried chicken the same way ever again.

The movie was based on a play, but last I heard, they were trying to make a tv series about it. Not sure how that would play out, because the movie is pretty concise. Not much room for expansion, me thinks, but what do I know?

McConaughey is awesome.

Escape from NY - The Best Cast Ever

Since America is in shambles right now, this movie seems like a more than appropriate viewing. As the opening titles roll, I was in awe at all the great names involved.

UFO Abduction aka The McPherson Tape (1989) the first horror found footage

I can count the amount of found footage movies that I think are truly good on 1 hand: Cannibal Holocaust, Trollhunter and since yesterday I can add finally a third.

Apparently shot in 1989 even though it feels it is even older. I have seen the year 1983 circulate as well. So it predates the first popular and widespread full found footage horror movie The Blair Witch Project by at least 10 years. It remains rather unclear to me why the director decided to release this immediately on video but afterwards it seemed only a happy few got hold of a copy of the videotape and spread it among each other. Especially among alien enthusiasts the movie was believed to be authentic and apparently the NASA wouldn't confirm either it was actually all put in scene. This was probably as the end credits were erased and the movie ends with pictures of the missing 'family' members.

Imagine there was widespread internet at that time could it have been a hit just like The Blair Witch Project. BWP I don't like it at all mostly because the protagonists are all unlikable and I really didn't have the feeling it was realistic and it did felt acted and put in scene. I didn't have that with The McPherson Tape. It's all shot with a heavy handcam and the picture quality is not really good. You don't get to see much of the aliens but you do actually see them a few times (you don't get to see The witch in BWP nor any other possible threat if my memory serves me right). IN other words there is a real threat and not just some sounds or the aftermath of a nightly visit. The movie takes place in and around the house all in the same night where family are celebrating their daughter's 5th birthday. And guess what this kid isn't the whiny brat and sounds braver than most of the grown ups. The threat and the fear they have that at any point those aliens could take a leap at them feels genuine. Actually I rarely have seen that so convincingly.

Hopefully this one gets a DVD or BRD release with some nice extras, I think it deserves the recognition.
A real SOV and a good one IMO.
