RANTS & RAMBLINGS

CLOSING TIME

May 1, 2009

There are two versions of this place. There's the daytime version. People talking. Coffee brewing. Records spinning. Arguments about music.

Then there's the version that exists after closing. The lights are lower. The machines are quiet. The conversations are gone.

Sometimes I sit here for a while before locking up. Just listening to the building. Every old place makes noises. Settling wood. Pipes. Air vents. The usual stuff. Most nights that's all it is. Most nights.

Anyway. We're getting a shipment of used vinyl on Thursday. Bring cash.

REVIEW: HEAVEN & HELL โ€“ THE DEVIL YOU KNOW

Apr 28, 2009

Let's be honest about what this actually is: it's the Dehumanizer-era Black Sabbath lineup operating under a different name for legal reasons. Having Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice back in a room together making heavy music is exactly what this pathetic decade needed before it wrapped up.

The Devil You Know is an absolute masterclass in slow, suffocating doom metal. Iommi's riffs on tracks like "Atom and Evil" and "Bible Black" drag themselves out of the speakers like a monster pulling itself out of a tarp pits. They are impossibly heavy. And Dio? The man is nearly seventy years old and he still sings with more power, clarity, and genuine operatic malice than every metal vocalist half his age. It's dark, it's monolithic, and it completely ignores every radio trend of the last ten years.

THE VERDICT: A mandatory purchase. It's tragic to think this might be the last time we hear this specific magic on tape, but if it is, they went out on top of the mountain. Buy the vinyl.

REVIEW: MASTODON โ€“ CRACK THE SKYE

Mar 24, 2009

I've had this spinning on the store turntable for three days straight, and every time the needle hits the groove, I find something new hidden in the mix. Mastodon used to just be a raw, caveman-heavy sludge band, but Crack the Skye is a massive, multi-layered progressive rock epic.

They went into the studio with Brendan O'Brien and recorded a concept album about astral travel, czarist Russia, and string theory. It sounds ridiculous on paper, but the execution is breathtaking. The guitars are thick and swirling, utilizing old-school 70s distortion tones instead of that sterile, modern digital crunch. Tracks like "Oblivion" and the four-part epic "The Czar" bridge the gap between classic Pink Floyd space-rock and heavy Neurosis-style metal. The drumming by Brann Dailor is absolutely frantic but completely precise.

THE VERDICT: This is the Dark Side of the Moon for the heavy metal generation. A monumental achievement that demands a good pair of headphones and a dark room.

CODE CITATION #49821: SUCK ON THIS

Mar 5, 2009

To the spineless bureaucrat from the District 3 Code Enforcement office who taped a "Noise and Nuisance" warning to my front door at 4:00 AM: I see you.

Apparently, playing Captain Beefheart at a reasonable afternoon volume "disrupts the local commerce environment." This town has seen literal bloodbaths in the streets, but a little avant-garde jazz is what's going to destroy the local economy? Give me a break.

The Java Hole is the only place left in this zip code that isn't corporate-approved, pasteurized, and plastic-wrapped for your protection. The live shows continue as scheduled this weekend. Bring earplugs if your delicate, suburban ears can't handle the truth. The fine is already in the mail, paid entirely in unrolled nickels.

VERY FUNNY. BACK TO WORK.

Feb 19, 2009

To whichever one of my useless weekend employees thinks theyโ€™re a comedy genius: Your joke has officially run its course.

I walked into the back office this morning to grab the inventory clipboard and noticed the old analog wall clockโ€”the one that's been plugged into the same outlet since 1995โ€”was completely dead. The second hand was frozen. I took it down to see if the internal gears jammed, and the hands were stopped exactly at eleven minutes past seventeen. Or seventeen minutes past eleven. Take your pick.

I know you idiots are doing this on purpose now. You think it's hilarious to mess with the old man because you heard me grumbling about the register receipts last year. Ha ha. Very creative. The next person caught messing with the shop hardware or resetting the wall displays is getting their hours cut to zero. Fix the clock and go wash the mugs.

WHAT BOOKSHELF?

Jan 14, 2009

A surprising number of respondents believe a hidden room behind a bookshelf would contain government files.

Which raises two important questions:

First, why do so many of you immediately assume government involvement?

Second, who told you about the room behind the bookshelf?

We are done discussing this matter.

REVIEW: GUNS N' ROSES โ€“ CHINESE DEMOCRACY

Nov 25, 2008

It actually happened. The sky didn't fall, hell didn't freeze over, and Axl Rose finally stopped tweaking his mixing boards after fourteen years to release an actual piece of plastic.

Let's clear the air right now: this is not a Guns N' Roses record. Slash isn't here, Duff isn't here, and the street-trash grit of Appetite for Destruction is completely gone, replaced by layers of industrial loops, synthesizers, and about forty different guitar tracks laid down by a rotating door of studio mercenaries. It's an over-produced, multi-million-dollar monument to one man's ego.

But here's the frustrating partโ€”some of it actually works. When Axl stops trying to sound like Trent Reznor and just screams his head off on tracks like "Better" or "There Was a Time," you remember why he was the biggest rock star on the planet. The guitar solos are ridiculous, the arrangements are completely unhinged, and it's easily the most fascinating disaster of the decade.

THE VERDICT: It's an artifact of pure madness. Buy it just so you can look at the cover artwork and convince yourself it actually exists.

THE LANDLORD EXTORTION RACKET

Nov 14, 2008

Got a certified letter from the property management company yesterday informing me that the lease on the Java Hole space is increasing by fifteen percent starting next quarter. Their reasoning? "Market adjustments for the commercial district."

What market? Half the storefronts on this block have been empty since the factories shut down, but these out-of-town suit-and-tie parasites think they can squeeze blood from a stone. They want to price out the independent shops so they can lease the square footage to a generic vitamin store or a corporate tax-prep office.

I told them flat out: I'm not paying a dime more for a roof that leaks every time we get a heavy frost. I built this shop with my own hands. We're staying right here, and if they want to evict me, they can come down here with a crew and try to physically move three tons of vinyl shelving themselves. Bring backup.

REVIEW: AC/DC - BLACK ICE

Oct 22, 2008

The band took a long hiatus to recharge their batteries, but this is classic AC/DC all the way. Even the dumb radio tracks like "Rock and Roll Train" have me singing along and questioning my aversion to pop radio. Everything on this album sounds like it could have come out in the 80s, and that's an incredible accomplishment.

Unfortunately, the corporate criminals made a deal with Wal-Mart for exclusive distribution rights, so you wont find it here. Not now, not likely ever, as you'd have to be a tasteless poser to ever sell this disc.

THE VERDICT: Bite the bullet and go to Wally's. It's worth it.

THE ANNUAL PARADE OF CHUMPS IS HERE

Oct 4, 2008

Walked down Main Street today and saw they set up another one of those corporate "Spirit" pop-up shops in the old pharmacy building. Cheap, flammable nylon masks made in a sweatshop, sold by some college kid who couldn't tell Alice Cooper from Alice in Chains.

Every October, this town turns into a circus for out-of-town ghouls who want to gawk at our scars. You want to see something scary? Look at your credit card statement after buying a thirty-dollar plastic machete.

We have real stock here. Real vinyl, real local art, and real coffee that doesn't taste like hot river water mixed with pumpkin syrup. If you're coming to town to take pictures of an empty lot or buy mass-produced garbage, stay on the interstate. We don't want your tourist dollars and we don't care about your blogs.
