NOTICE: UNCLE MEAT'S JAVA HOLE IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED

Jan 30, 2022

To the patrons, late-night loiterers, and music purists of Haddonfield:

We regret to inform you that Uncle Meat passed away peacefully yesterday evening at the age of 81.

For over forty years, the Java Hole stood as a stubborn, uncompromising sanctuary for real rock 'n' roll, surviving changing formats, corporate music chains, and the heavy tragedies that reshaped our town. Though the shop grew quiet in recent years, Meat never stopped spinning vinyl, never stopped complaining about digital music, and never once let a bad record play on his turntable.

There will be no corporate buyout, no liquidation sale, and no replacement staff taking over the counter. The doors have been locked for the final time.

This website will remain online indefinitely as a static archive of his reviews from 2007 to 2009β€”a small digital monument to a man who refused to compromise his ears, his tastes, or his standards for anyone.

"Turn it up loud enough to break the windows, or don't bother turning it on at all."

Rest in peace, Meat. Say hello to the kids for us.

RIP RJD

May 17, 2010

Ronnie James Dio passed away yesterday.

I don't have much steam for writing these days, as anyone looking at this dead page can tell. The shop is quiet. Haddonfield is quiet. Most days I don't even feel like turning the amplifiers on. But you don't let a giant like Ronnie go without saying something.

I saw him with Rainbow in '76 at the Aragon Ballroom. Little guy. Couldn't have been more than 5'3". But the second he took the mic and hit the first note of Stargazer, he looked twelve feet tall. He didn't need pyrotechnics, he didn't need a costume, and he didn't need to jump around like a clown. He just stood there, threw up the horns, and blew the roof off the place with a voice that sounded like it was forged in an anvil.

Then he steps into Black Sabbath after Ozzy leftβ€”when everyone thought the band was dead in the waterβ€”and gives us Heaven and Hell. He saved them. He kept the flame alive.

The music industry today is full of frauds, lip-syncers, and plastic celebrities who couldn't hold a candle to his shadow. Ronnie was the real deal. He treated the fans like family and he never, ever compromised the music.

The world is a lot darker, quieter, and cheaper today without him.

Put on Holy Diver tonight. Turn the knob until it clicks. Don't let the neighbors complain.

Rest in peace, Ronnie. Thanks for the magic.

USED CD BINS BIN CLEANOUT - 3 FOR $10

Jan 22, 2010

We are officially sick of looking at the used CD bins in the center aisle. Since nobody under the age of 25 apparently owns a physical disc tray anymore, we're clearing them out.

There is a ton of good 90s thrash, groove metal, and industrial stuff in here if you actually bother to flip through them. We even found three clean copies of White Zombie's Astro-Creep: 2000 that Harley logged in right before the summer.

Meat came out of the back office for five minutes yesterday to look at the bins, shook his head, muttered something about "digital zombies," and locked his door again. That's the most progress we've seen in a month. Hit the catalog page, select the used section, and help us clear the floor space.

THE REISSUE CRATES ARE OPEN (WE NEED THE SPACE)

Dec 15, 2009

We're still here. Web orders are shipping twice a week now instead of daily, so stop emailing the support inbox asking where your tracking number is. We're doing this with two pairs of hands.

Meat always over-ordered on classic heavy wax, so we have an absolute mountain of 180-gram gatefold reissues sitting behind the counter that need to go. If you want real analog mastering, we've got copies of Black Sabbath - Master of Reality and Alice in Chains - Dirt priced to move.

The store used to smell like fresh espresso and Harley and Mya would be blasting some god-awful local noise to piss off the street traffic. Now it just smells like cardboard boxes and packing tape. Buy some records so we can pay the heating bill for January.

BACK IN BLACK (ALMOST)

Nov 30, 2009

We got the front door replaced. The plywood is finally down.

Meat is sitting in the back office right now. He hasn't come out to check the inventory crates in three weeks, and the coffee machine is still turned off because nobody else knows how to calibrate the pressure valves without getting shocked. He told us to just keep selling the remaining vinyl stock online so we can pay the utilities.

We tried telling some guy off today for asking about digital music, just like Meat used to do, but... honestly, it didn't feel the same. The fire isn't there right now. We're just trying to keep the lights on. If you want to support the shop, buy a shirt from the catalog. Don't ask to speak to the boss. He's not taking visitors.

Why Meat is Absent

Nov 17, 2009

I know a lot of you are wondering if Meat will return to his routine tirades. I'm sorry to report that the situation isn't hopeful. We're all feeling broken by the loss of Harley and Mya, but Meat is taking it the hardest. He would always razz and badger the girls, and he feels guilty about it. He doesn't believe us when we tell him that they genuinely loved having him as their boss.

I was with him the day after it happened. When neither of them came in, he was staring at the clock, waiting for the bad news. I know this because I was tracing his eyes to the same clock we teased him about before. He knew something had happened to them, and he knew exactly when he was going to find out.

The call came at 11:17 AM. Maybe he was right about the numbers this whole time, because none of this feels organic.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT (SORT OF)

Nov 12, 2009

For those asking: No, the shop is not closed permanently. Yes, the front windows are boarded up for now.

Uncle Meat is... unavailable indefinitely following the events of last month. He didn't leave a will or a business plan, just a basement full of uncataloged prog-rock bootlegs and a coffee machine that leaks static electricity. We're going to keep the server running to clear out the remaining inventory and physical stock.

Don't expect any more rants. Nobody here has the lung capacity or the anger management issues required to type them. Check the catalog page for updated shipping rates.

THE HOSPITAL VISIT

Nov 5, 2009

Meat and the few of us left at the Java Hole went to visit Laurie today in the hospital. She's awake, but she's distant. We all shared our love and support for her, but we couldn't get a reaction out of her. It wasn't until Meat made a joke about how punks don't die easily that she actually cracked a grin. She's lost so much, but she hasn't lost us yet. Send your regards. Let her know that you miss her.

IN MEMORIUM

Nov 3, 2009

The store remains closed, but our hearts are open to anyone who needs to talk. Drop by the store to hang out with us, because we're lingering around even if Meat keeps the doors locked.

THE HALLOWEEN INCIDENT

Nov 2, 2009

As many of you already know, our community was hit with a terrible tragedy on October 31st. Harley David and Mya Rockwell were murdered, and Laurie Strode was hospitalized after a police shootout. We don't know all the details yet, but we do know that it had something to do with Michael Myers.

Harley, Mya, and Laurie weren't just employees here. They were more than just our friends. They were our family. They made this place into a home, and people didn't come here just to buy records and drink coffee. They came here because those girls gave this place a soul. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families, and anyone else who suffers because of this senseless act of violence.

And to Laurie... we love you so much and we're praying for your recovery.
