The Warriors (2005)

image When most people familiar with video games think of movies turned into video games, they shudder a little. They don't have the best reputation. Back in the '80s and '90s, if it was a movie, odds were, a shitty video game tie-in would follow. The Angry Video Game Nerd has covered quite a few of them.

What makes this game based on Walter Hill's 1979 classic any better? Well to start, it was made by Rockstar. Even if you aren't into video games, you've likely heard of their Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar puts a lot of effort into their games and The Warriors was no different.

The story of The Warriors video game is split into two parts: the events that take place before the movie and the events of the movie itself. If you've seen the movie (if you haven't, stop reading this drivel and go watch it), then you might understand what I mean when I say you play out the movie.

image You take control of various members of The Warriors gang and you fight your way through other gangs and the police. Aspects of the story are expanded to make it more of a game, such as sneaking through enemy turf before your final showdown with them, but everything from the movie is there.

As for the parts of the game set before the movie (starting at 90 days before), you not only learn about how various members of The Warriors joined the gang and their previous encounters with the other gangs, you learn everything you need to know about playing the game for the movie side of the story.

An added bonus to the game is that a lot of the actors from the movie returned to voice their characters. They also managed to use the movie's soundtrack, many of the songs being heard on the radio in The Warrior's hideout on Coney Island during the pre-movie portion. The hideout's where you raise your stats and select your next mission.

image The game originally came out on Playstation 2 and Xbox. While it's never again appeared on Xbox for some reason, it's been released digitally for both Playstation 3 and 4. If you enjoy the movie, I believe you'd enjoy the game. It's not overly difficult and Rockstar seemed to care a lot about the movie when they made it.

Five Nights at Freddy's

image If you live in the United States, you have to be living under a rock if you've at least never heard of Chuck E. Cheese's. But for those of you who are unaware, let me sum up Chuck E. Cheese's right here: a place that sells low quality pizza, has games that give tickets for prizes (cheap toys and other small junk like that), and has an animatronic show, featuring Chuck E. Cheese himself and some other forgettable characters. In other words, a chaotic, fun time for kids and a living nightmare for parents.

So, with all of that in mind, allow me to present: Five Nights at Freddy's (2014). A low budget, indie, point-and-click, survival horror game that takes place in the fictional Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. You're the night time security guard, which would normally probably be a really boring job in a place like that. But not here. Here, the animatronic's roam around at night and if they manage to get inside your little security room, you are completely fucked. As a previous employee in the game describes over the phone to you on your first night, they will think you're a robot out of costume and force you into a costume, where you're stabbed by the metal parts meant to connect to the robots.

image Inside your security room, you do have a few ways to help protect yourself, but of course, there are catches. There's a camera system, but the cameras don't cover certain areas, including the two hallways right outside of the security room. There's also one camera that has audio, but no video and occasionally, all of the cameras momentarily lose their video feed. For the two hallways outside of the security room, you can turn on lights, but the lights only stay on for a few seconds. And then there are electronic doors that you can shut to cut off the security room from the rest of the building. But here's where the biggest catch comes into play: all of these things run off of a limited power supply and once you run out of that power, you lose all of those defenses, leaving you at the mercy of the four animatronics: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, and Foxy the Pirate Fox.

image As the title of the game states, there are five nights to the game. I'm only up to night four myself, but apparently, if you manage to get through all five nights, you unlock a night six and after that, a night where you can customize the difficulty of each individual animatronic. Each night gets more difficult than the last, meaning you'll die a lot. The previous employee I mentioned before calls you at the start of each night, giving a little advice and adding a little story to the game, though don't expect anything truly deep and groundbreaking. The game is definitely kept as simple as possible. And for that, I don't think I'm going to find much replay value in the game when I finish up all of the nights.

image Something that I feel is pretty unique about the game is its use of pre-rendered graphics. Pre-rendered graphics were a popular technique for games back in the 1990s, which allowed for higher detail that 3D graphics at the time couldn't provide, but as a result, interaction with the pre-rendered graphics was limited. The early Resident Evil games used a combination of pre-rendered graphics (the backgrounds) and 3D graphics (the character/enemy models). But as 3D graphics have improved in quality, pre-rendered graphics have been forgotten about. As a result, I feel that Five Nights at Freddy's use of pre-rendered graphics gives the game a certain nostalgic edge.

image If you like a lot of jump scares that aren't just cheap and irrelevant, then this game is definitely for you. It's simple, but very effective at what it does. As I said, I don't think the game will have much replay value once it's beaten, but I only paid $5 for it on Steam, so it's hard to really complain about that.

Dawn of the Dead: The Video Game (or is it?)

image

image In 1986, Ubisoft released their first video game, simply titled Zombi, which was also the European title for George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. The game doesn't exactly follow the movie's plot, because remember, this was 1986, before an actual plot was a priority in video games, but a lot of the same things happen. Four survivors of a zombie apocalypse land on the roof of a zombie-filled mall, where they proceed to do things like steal guns from a gun store, block the mall entrances with trucks, and place the bodies of the zombies inside a walk-in freezer.

The thing is though, this isn't really Dawn of the Dead at all and is really more of a giant rip off. The four characters might somewhat resemble the four main characters in Dawn of the Dead, especially if you're playing the original black and white version of the game, but their names aren't even close to the names of the characters in the movie, instead named after the people who originally developed the game. Alexandre, Sylvie, Yannick, and Patrick... yeah, that's not really even close, is it?

image The inside of the mall looks nothing like the mall in Dawn of the Dead either. Now you could just say they couldn't get the rights for any of that, but to that, I would say, it's a giant rip off! Seriously, I'm surprised Romero hasn't sued Ubisoft over this game. The only reasons I can think of that he hasn't are: the plot's different enough, as they're at the mall just looking for gasoline for their helicopter, he doesn't think the game is a big enough deal to bother suing over, or he's simply never even heard about it. The third option wouldn't surprise me.

image So now that we've established what a rip off of Dawn of the Dead this game is, let's talk a little about the game itself. You can control all four characters by simply clicking on the icon of the one you want to control. There's even parts where you'll need to constantly switch between two of them to get a task accomplished and to me, considering when the game came out, that's a pretty advanced idea.

image The game focuses heavily on point-and-clicking and puzzle solving, though you can fight the zombies too with guns and melee weapons. The guns are the better choice, of course, since it's possible to never have to actually fight a zombie if you can always put them down with a head shot first. If you fuck up the head shot, the zombie will start clawing and growling at you, draining your health, until you do manage to put it down.

image You actually have three status bars per character, but I really don't know what they stand for exactly: F, H, and S. Food, health, and stamina? I say food, because you can actually click on food in a couple stores in the game to refill your status bars some. I'm probably way off on what they really stand for though.

image Other than losing all of your health, you can also die instantly in a few ways. One is when you're outside moving the trucks in front of the entrances. If you walk past the edge of the mall, you're dead. That might sound like a simple and easy rule to follow, but on a couple sides of the mall, there's no way to know where the edge is other than just figuring it out through trial and error, and it's not exactly easy to tell on the other sides either. You can continue the game with the other characters if you lose one, but before a certain point, I think it'd be impossible to complete the game with any less than two still alive.

image One thing I've not been able to figure out in the game is this store with beds. Your characters can lay down in them, but if they do, you might as well just consider them to be dead. They might get up again eventually, but by the time they do, you'll probably have grown bored and quit the game anyway. This might have something to do with your stats, maybe the S, but I've never waited around long enough to find out.

image I think my biggest complaint about this game is triggering the final part of the game. If you've seen Dawn of the Dead, you can probably guess what that means: bikers. I was following a pretty vague guide the first time I played and it didn't even give a hint as to how you trigger the final part. Even after I knew, I couldn't get to the final part, so I finally just started the game over entirely and it worked. Despite that, I still don't know precisely how or where it triggers.

Do I recommend this game? Overall, it's really not a bad game. If you're big fan of Dawn of the Dead, I say definitely check it out. Otherwise, I still say check it out if you're curious and bored, but you're not exactly missing anything ground breaking either if you skip it. There's a couple gameplay videos on YouTube too anyway. I used an Amiga emulator and rom myself to play it, which was one of the colorized ported versions from 1990.

Thanks for reading. Until next time.
