Tromeo And Juliet (1996)

Way back in '98, when I really started getting into B-Horror and other cult classics, Three movies by three legendary directors caught my eye more so than the rest, and they would shape my taste in trash cinema and influence my outlook on life. Herschell Gordon Lewis' Two Thousand Maniacs, John Waters' Pink Flamingos, and Lloyd Kaufman's Tromeo And Juliet. Those movies brought me more joy as a teenager than I could put into words. But I'd like to talk about one of them in particular. Tromeo And Juliet is a very 90's, very Gen-X, somewhat surreal parody of the immensely popular Leo Decaprio film which came out not long before it. Founder and President or Troma, Lloyd Kaufman, always did dabble in the spoofing, and never has it been more hilarious. Somewhere between The Toxic Avenger and this movie, Kaufman eased up on the graphic violence and trashy nature his films once flaunted, due to an attempt at mainstream appeal. But at some point in the mid-90's, Lloyd and Troma said "Fuck it", and decided to make a movie with some balls, again. And with the help of writer, James Gunn, Tromeo And Juliet was born. This would be a turning point for the films of Lloyd Kaufman, as well as Troma as a whole.
For 20 years, the Capulets and the Qs have been at eachother's throats. A feud that started between Monty Q and his former friend, Cap Capulet. They once owned a softcore film company together, and soon become rivals once Cap Stole the business out from under him, as well as his wife. Monty, now a babbling drunk, living in poverty, he, his son, Tromeo, his cousin, Benny, and their overly confrontational friend, Murray, are now in the middle of a deadly family feud with these arrogant, perverse Capulets. An encounter with any of these people can escalate at a ridiculous rate. Otherwise, the Q family and their friend are pretty easy going. However, Tromeo is the ladies man of the group, but makes a habit of ending up with chicks who shit on his good nature. However, when he meets Juliet at a costume ball, it's love at first sight. Unfortunately, she's the one Capulet he's never met. Her father, Cap, has always kept her on a short leash, to say the least. Later that night, Tromeo sneaks in the Capulet house, and finds Juliet locked in a glass case. The 19 year old is being punished for having a wet dream by her father who often watches her sleep. Cap is a drunken, wife beating pervert who has promised the vegetarian Juliet to a billionare who owns a meat company. A high strung tool whom she has very little affection for. This, however, doesn't discourage Tromeo, as he quickly proposes, which would end any chance of this farce of a marriage from happening, as well as any chance of Cap gaining a billionare son-in-law. As this 20 year long feud rages on, and Cap catching wind of this new marriage, the shit is finally about to hit the fan.
Unlike every movie Lloyd Kaufman made before or since, Tromeo And Juliet does lack a bit of the goofy humor he normally applies. And I think easing up for once was the right decision. Regardless of whether it was his decision or not And let's not forget this movie has some damn fine actors. And not to mention James Gunn's genius script. Just a lot of good decisions all around. I don't claim to know anything, but I'd tend to give Mr. Gunn more credit for this accomplishment than Lloyd, as this is clearly unlike anything Kaufman ever did, and probably ever will do, again. Tromeo And Juliet is hip. It's unique, and could possibly be taken seriously by a non-Troma fan. A movie I could easily see gaining more mainstream appeal than the ones that were actually meant to. There's still plenty of Kaufman's signature slapstick in this, and shout outs to his past movies, like a Toxic Avenger Part II poster on Tromeo's bedroom wall. Nothing wrong with that. There's also a a strong anti-meat message going on, here, that I can only assume is the PETA-friendly Lloyd's doing. It works well, though. Juliet's fiance, London Arbuckle, is one of the most entertaining characters in the movie. And then there's the penis monster, decapitations and other dismemberments, freaks, perverts, incest, and some pretty hot fuckin'. All the while, dialing the silliness back a notch, Kaufman went all out in every other direction.
And since Tromeo And Juliet was a success, everything that Lloyd Kaufman has come out with since this been more violent, has included more nudity, as well as a trashy, self aware vibe which has become the modern Troma trademark. It doesn't get said enough, but Tromeo And Juliet was a game changer that breathed new life into Troma, and made way for fucked up movies of the 21st century like Terror Firmer and Poultrygeist. None of which can hold a candle to Tromeo And Juliet in my opinion. But all a massive improvement over Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD. Just sayin'. Come to think of it, I actually haven't even seen that one. But I have seen the trailer, and I can honestly say Tromeo And Juliet is a far better movie. And it's really a shame more of the cast didn't end up becoming Kaufman regulars after this, because every single actor shines, and helps make it the masterpiece that it is. However, we would later on see Will Keenan and Debbie Rochon in Terror Firmer. A film which turns the volume way up on this new ballsy style which began right here. Not unlike The Toxic Avenger, Tromeo And Juliet isn't just another silly Lloyd Kaufman Troma movie. it's a Troma movie which defines a generation. 8/10

Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead (2006)

I like Troma movies. As a teenager, I loved them. A few of them, I still do, I guess. But over the years, the Troma Team got a little old, and I eventually discovered a whole world of B-Horror outside Kaufman and Herz. And honestly, those guys rarely get a hold of anything worth a damn anymore. And that's been true since the early 2000's, with no sign of a change. Sad but true. But there's still plenty of legendary Troma productions/aquisitions that are still worth many a rewatch. The Combat Shocks, the Redneck Zombies, The Blood Sucking Freaks. Movies like that is what keeps their reputation in tact. But then, there's the films of Lloyd Kaufman. Let's talk about Lloyd Kaufman for a minute.
Most Troma movies are bad on some level. But only when watching a Lloyd Kaufman film to do I get the feeling this movie was intended for idiots. If a Jerry Lewis character from one of his shit movies from the 60's started directing his own movies, and randomly threw in vulgar humor for shock value, along with an unnecessary amount of childish bullshit, then, it might turn out something like a Lloyd Kaufman film. When he started out making movies under the Troma banner, they were all co-directed with his friend (?), the ever elusive Michael Herz. The Hebrew duo would start out making what they now refer to as "the sexy comedies". From the late 70's until the early 80's, the first real Troma movies were bestowed upon us. Squeeze Play, Waitress!, Stuck On You!, and The First Turn On. The last one mentioned is now mostly known for the film that a young Madonna auditioned for and got turned away, along with the success her participation would have brought them in the years to come. I've never seen that movie. In fact, the only Sexy Comedy I have seen is Stuck On You! And it very well may be the last. These are some awful, unfunny movies that appear to be made by retarded virgins. The change in style that was coming was a much needed one.
In 1984, The Toxic Avenger was released. A film that didn't do great at first, but brought Troma massive success. Perhaps not "Madonna success", but Toxie put those guys on the map, and regardless of how far they decline, they're still there unlike so many other independent film companies that have since fallen. After several sequels, and a cartoon called The Toxic Crusaders, the success had been fully milked, and Kaufman/Herz (and eventually just Kaufman) would go on to direct a decade of hits or misses such as Class Of Nuke 'Em High, Troma's War, and SGT. Kabukiman NYPD. All tame compared to Toxie. All obviously attempts at maintaining a semi-mainstream appeal that was already long gone. It wasn't until 1996's Tromeo And Juliet that Lloyd and Troma got their groove back and finally started putting back in the offensive, vulgar humor that got them their original fame. Lloyd's next two movies, Terror Firmer (1999), and Citizen Toxie (2000) would be proof that this formula was a success, because Lloyd ran with what he was doing and turned the volume WAY up on the shock value and intentionally bad qualities. And the same direction would be taken several years later with Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead. Let's talk about that for a minute.
Poultrygeist could easily be seen as the ultimate Kaufman directed Troma film. And I'm sure it is by many. All the satire, gore, boobies and silliness is present and shoved right down your throat. This film is one long running joke about how shitty the fast food industry is, and corporate greed in general. It's also a musical. Our main character is Arbie. A dim-witted little pussy with a face perfect for a Troma movie. He's mad at his girlfriend Wendy for going all "liberal dyke" on him, and leaving him for a scary muff diver after promising him she'd never leave him ever. So, I guess that'd make her his ex-girlfriend. Anyway, Arbie breaks into song like a dumb ass, and then decided to get a job at the new chicken restaurant where Wendy and other liberals are outside protesting. Revenge, I guess. Personally, I would have at least tried to find someone else in order to make her jealous, but whatever works.
American Chicken Bunker hires the very much uneducated Arbie within seconds, as he gets introduced to his co-workers. A horny gay Mexican, Paco Bell, bitchy terorrist chick, Hummus, and an animal fucker by the name of Carl Jr. And let the obnoxious stereotypes run wild! Along with a song every 5 minutes, and semi-ammusing cameos by Ron Jeremy, Joe Fleishaker and the penis-monster. As we witness several run ins between Arbie and Wendy, who are still into each other, at least sexually. We also discover That American Chicken Bunker was built on top of the cursed Tromahawk Indian burial ground. That and the shitty toxic chicken everyone's been eating leads to everyone turning into chicken zombies, as an above average gorefest ensues.
This one just goes too far for me. Too much silly, too many attempts at humor, too many attempts at offensive. Just too many attempts, period. The first word that comes to mind when I think of Poultrygeist is "desperate". It's a movie that seems like it was made by a desperate man. I've heard Troma wasn't doing great financially at the time, and this was their big chance to turn things around. And I guess it worked, which is great, but I just wasn't feeling this one. Of course, there was some crazy shit now and then that forced a laugh out of me, like the very end for example, but I just found Poultrygeist to be a bit too constant. There's an old saying, "less is more". Well, a little less here and there might have made a huge difference, in my humble opinion.
But to be fair, there are plenty of things I didn't hate. The first thing to come to mind was the songs. Yes. The songs. I hate musicals with a passion. Cannibal The Musical has always been the only one I don't hate. I didn't hate Poultrygeist. And while I believe it would have been better without the songs, they were some damn funny songs that weren't like fingernails on a chalkboard at all. They were actually kind of catchy, too. Plus, they were all bunched together, and once they ended, the story finally started moving along. The eager looking little gipper who played Arbie and the weird chick with the amazing voice who played Wendy were superb, as well as alot of the other actors. They all did a great job with the material they were given. To get a good idea of what a hellish ordeal Kaufman put these people through, check out the behind the scenes documentary, Poultry In Motion: Truth Is Stranger Than Chicken. Looking past how annoying and obnoxious this movie can be, I suppose it's good enough. A step down from the last 3 Kaufman trash epics, but it ain't no lame ass Kabukiman. That's for sure. 4/10

What's the deal with all these Trash Zones?
We've all come to this site and gotten bored with it, because of how aimlessly vague it is. Well not anymore, because now, we have purpose. Now, we have Trash Zones https://trashepics.com/sub/.
A lot of users had been interested in having their own corner of this website to specialize in a unique theme. I finally got crackin' and worked those in here. I've given them database support, which means they can be easily edited to suit your needs. I try to automate everything worthwhile on this site. The less I have to do to maintain it, the better. I'm a lazy man, so anyone running a zone will help me keep this site active.
Here's a bit of info on the recent influx of garbage zone-age:
The Ren Zone - Well, since I'm @Renzo, and I can't let everyone else have all the fun... I have a zone of my own. I'll just put boring news articles like this one in it. Posts are not exclusive to a single zone, and may appear in any number of zones. It all depends on the zone's criteria for what posts it should list. My zone just looks for posts tagged as #/httr/, so I just tag a post as #/httr/ and it will show up in my listing. Other than that, my zone is pretty useless.
The Halloween Zone - It used to be just about the film franchise, but god damnit... I like Halloween too much to limit it to a single mediocre horror series! Now, this zone will show ALL public posts that are posted under media titles that are tagged as #halloween. There are a lot of good Halloween titles out there, like Dark Night of the Scarecrow, Night of the Demons, Donnie Darko, House of 1000 Corpses, etc. It will also have a live countdown to next Halloween. I wish I could think of better gimmicks for it...
Obviously, @Tromafreak needed to run the Troma Zone. He's posting some good shit there, and it adding these shitty movies to our database of trashy movies, and it's wonderful. He reviews movies mostly. Since a bulk of Troma's movies are available for free on youtube, I advise he sets the featured youtube video to a different Troma movie every so often. This zone will show ALL public posts that are posted under media titles that are tagged as #troma.
Our slasher aficionado @slasherfan85 wanted a Slasher Zone, and I say hellz yeah. We all need a little more slashers in our diet, and as uninspired as it may be at times, it's still one of my favorite horror sub-genres. This zone will show ALL public posts that are posted under media titles tagged as #slasher.
When @AlcoholicNinja wanted to jump on the zone bandwagon, he got hard just thinking about the possibilities of what he could do with a Porno Zone. This is Trash Epics, right? This zone will show ALL public posts that are tagged as #porn. π
The Ball Zone is operated by @Ballz. Who would've figured? What many of you probably don't know (since he rarely graces us with his presence) is that he is putting all of his efforts into a novel he plans on selling. Since Ballz is my hangsta numba uno, I'm giving him a zone where he doesn't have to abide by any specific guidelines, but I figure it would be a good place for him to sell his novel. This zone will only show Ballz's public posts.
@Moffat wanted to talk about comics, so he has a zone... but he ain't doing anything with it yet. I don't know what posts to list, so right now, it just shows posts that posted under media titles tagged as #comic. At least I think he wanted the zone to be about comic movies...
And our sweet @Shaza wants to talk about foul, evil, dirty, dark, and depraved films in the Extreme Zone. Yeah, she looks nice, but she's into some sick shit. We need that on Trash Epics, because we need to cover all the basics of what good trash is all about. For now, this zone will show ALL public posts tagged as #extreme. Later on, when/if we get enough fitting titles in our media database, I may change it to show all posts that are posted under media tagged as #extreme. I don't know! @Shaza, you can add media titles to the database. Utilize this so you can update your featured media accordingly. The same goes for wiki pages.
And that's it so far. It'll be easy as hell to add more zones, should anyone come up with a legit idea. Now with these zones, I'm hoping the moderators of them will have fun with it, and try to come up with regular content for these zones. Have a weekly poll. Have a weekly movie that you recommend that everyone on the site see. And put the trailer as your featured video. Post lists about this stuff. Post achievements that are relevant to your cause. They can be for winning some kind of contest or game you might hold on your zone. Get creative. Because I'm even allowing you to style these zones with pure css, and script in pure javascript. Of course, I know you guys don't know fuck all about that, but it gives me good practice should we decide to work in some gimmicks into your zone.
