I Spit On Your Grave (1978)

image

Rape-Revenge flicks aren't really my cup of tea. I mean, they're okay, and are sometimes far more entertaining than they should be. But nothing to jizz over, in my opinion. But like every exploitation sub genre, there's always that one movie which stands out. The one which defines the sub genre, and the one which all the others are compared. As far as this particular sub genre goes, that'd be the forever notorious I Spit On Your Grave. Filmed in Connecticut by Meir Zarchi, and starring Camille Keaton as an easy going writer, just looking for a little inspiration and relaxation, but is plunged into a nightmare, one day, and is changed forever because of it. An unflinching look at a long, grueling rape, the recovery, and eventually, violent retribution. Technically, not a great movie, and not exactly a gorefest one might expect, but there's just something about this film that hits a nerve. Love it or hate it, you'll never forget I Spit On Your Grave.

image So, this writer, Jennifer Hills, is traveling from the big city out into the sticks to write her new book. If not for a retard named Matthew, she mght have actually gotten somewhere. Matthew is a grocery delivery boy, and when delivering Jennifer's groceries, he develops a crush on the semi-flirty Jennifer. Nothing wrong with that, but after bragging to a bunch of ass holes at the gas station that he saw her tits, these Connecticut rednecks get all riled up about pussy, and get all up in Matthew's shit about being a virgin. And before we know it, a raping has been planned. A raping which is supposedly meant to rid Matthew of the burden that is his virginity. Wow! For a bunch of dicks who clearly hate Matthew, they sure are going all out, just so he can get his dick wet. But as we suspected, these good 'ol boys are planning on making a day of it. But virgins first, as they say..

The next day, the rednecks gang up on Jennifer, and get her into a vulnerable position to hold her down. Now applying all sorts of peer pressure to the man-child to take advantage of this opportunity, he just can't rise to the occasion, at first, so, the rest of them go to town on Jennifer, who, I might add, does a great job of selling the following scenes as painful and traumatizing. At one point, she actually looks like she's going insane. Not unlike Marilyn Burns from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. As we get back around to the retard's turn, he finally gets it up and sticks it in, yet Jennifer doesn't even give his sorry little prick a whimper. Not able to finish, Matthew gets nervous and quits. The other three go on to beat and berate Jennifer. And after having their fun, they try and stick the dirty work on Matthew. They now expect the retard to stab Jennifer in the heart to cover their asses. The idiots don't even go back in the house with him to make sure he does the job. And once again, the tard chokes up and lets her be. Once the guys find out, a few days later, Matthew is officially out of the rape clique. But now that Jennifer is getting the chance to recuperate and make her next move, Matthew may have much bigger problems. Same goes for the other three. Jennifer has lost a part of herself, and no longer gives a fuck. Going to the cops is apparently out of the question. Only bloody, uncompromising vengeance.

image I look at I Spit On Your grave in two different ways. One, overrated as an extreme film. And two, a film undeserving of much of the hate it's gotten in the past. Again, because it's not really THAT extreme. Sure. It is pretty harsh, at times. There is a 22 minute rape scene which the entire movie is based on, but it's off and on, and isn't all that graphic. One of the revenge scenes is arguably more disturbing. This film was once condemned to no end by critics who saw the film as nothing but an evil story with no moral, told from the rapist's point of view, with no self awareness. Obviously, nothing could be farther from the truth, as the men who raped Jennifer were portrayed as nothing more than obnoxious and ignorant. Besides also being a bit of an "Evil hicks vs. city slicker" Horror flick that was so popular in the 70's, I Spit On Your grave is a women's lib movie at its core. And the original title of Day Of The Woman is a good indication of that. Maybe the hate this movie has gotten had something to do with the unpleasant retitle, which sort of made this movie into something it was never meant to be. But what I Spit On Your Grave is, is a success. It's harsh, it's raw, and like Jennifer Hills, it doesn't give a fuck. 6/10

Okay. Let's say you were forced to be #2 in a human centipede, but unlike those unfortunates in the movie, you are given the option to pick anyone for #1 and #3. Anyone at all.

Lorna The Exorcist (1974)

Ahh Jess Franco. Everyone's favourite spanish pervert. Well, everyone's favourite right after Penelope Cruz. Not that she's a perv or anything, perhaps that's just wishful thinking on my behalf. But Franco, yeah he's a MAJOR perv. Don't believe me? Then you need to watch this movie. Cos quite frankly, it's the best soft core, porno, horror I have ever seen! But wait, there's something else, this movie is actually...good. Like really good. Like fucking amaze-balls good. Yeah that's how good. And it's something you could easily subsitute for a porno during your nightly passion sessions, if you're into that sorta thing. Then again, you might just appreciate it for it's value as just a damn good movie. Either way, it's a win-win. Let me elaborate. πŸ˜‰

Linda, played by the very young and incredibly beautiful Lina Romay, is about to turn 18. Everything is going to plan to celebrate her birthday, until her father Patrick gets an unsettling phone call from a mysterious woman called Lorna. Lorna wants Linda, and she'll stop at nothing to get her. Now she is appearing in Linda's dreams, and Patrick must do everything he can to save his only daughter from this mysterious woman, who appears to be capable of possessing others. But is he too late?...

image

There is something so beautiful about this movie. The score is just so beautiful, and goes so well with our beautiful stars, who are not shy to show their perfect bodies. Nor is the camera shy to get close enough for graphic details. Fans of the female form can rejoice as this movie focuses on beauty and perfection, especially private areas. Same might call this movie sleazy, and while it's one of the most explicit I have seen, there is something so hynotising about it, you just can't look away. It's like a dream that slowly descends into a nightmare. I don't think this movie is sleazy, I think it's amazing. I gotta find it interesting that this movie can be simultaneously arousing and disturbing at the same time. I don't think I have ever seen a movie quite like this before. At times beautiful and at others, downright horrifying. This combination works so well with this, and I give full credit to Franco for making such a thing possible.

image

The performances were fantastic, some even emotional. One of the most touching moments for me was when Jacqueline Laurent, playing the wife stands by her husband because nothing can destroy their love, even in times of trial. You'll pick it instantly when you watch it, it really was such an emotional and beautiful scene. I loved it.
Pamela Stanford is just hypnotic as the seductress Lorna. Her bright green eye shadow giving her such a menacing look with the stare that would freeze you up. Guy Delorme as Patrick also gives a strong performance as the tired and stressed father, doing everything he can to save his daughter, but the real star of this movie is the stunning Lina Romay. She played this part bravely as the innocent Linda, ready to be corrupted by the seductress Lorna. Her natural beauty highlighting her innocent nature. Her performance at the end is absolutely terrifying and bound to stay with you for a while. I do have to wonder if the makers of Sleepaway Camp saw this movie. Those who have seen the ending will know why. πŸ˜‰

image

The reason I am posting this is the extreme section is because there are at least a couple of scenes that will have you raising your eyebrows. I had no idea things would get so explicit. And by explicit, I mean pornographic. You'll know the female anatomy better than most females by the end of this movie. And while some ... um....love scenes.... are more than a little raunchy, some are intense and frightening! There is something so disturbing and horrifying about a couple of scenes. Those who have seen this movie probably know which scenes I am referring to, but I won't spoil them here. No doubt this movie caused some controversy.

https://somecamerunning.typepad.com/.a/6a00e5523026f58834014e8643f054970d-pi

With the focus on female sexual awakening, I wonder if this movie is really about possession? Perhaps it's Franco's take on the sexual repression of women. Polanski did the same with Repulsion, perhaps Franco takes it that step further. A teenager becoming a woman, opening up new feelings and emotions, letting her darker side take control? But then again maybe I am reading too much into it. πŸ˜„

My only complaint is this movie does drag a little in certain parts. At 99 mins, some scenes needn't be as long as they were. Still, it kept my attention and even caused my jaw to drop (multiple times) so I have to take my hat off to Mr Franco. This truly is such an amazing and awe struck film. One I believe I will be watching again.

Bug Chaser (2012)

image

Of all the strange and icky fetishes out there, bugchasing is certainly one of the more horrifying. Otherwise known as 'the fuck of death' or 'getting pozzed up', bugchasing is the practise whereby gay men deliberately and knowingly have unprotected sex with HIV-positive partners in order to become infected with the disease themselves. In the small bugchasing subculture, HIV+ men are highly prized and known as 'gift-givers'. I'm guessing you knew all of this already... or you're currently staring aghast at your computer screen, with your jaw hung open and a small sliver of your hope for humanity flying out the nearest window, never to be seen again. Don't worry, we all react like that the first time.

image Bugchasing has received only minimal attention from the media, outside of the occasional documentary like the BBC programme I Love Being HIV+ (2006). More recently, Todd Verow's controversial doco Bottom (2012) followed a young gay man's personal challenge to take 1000 unprotected jizzloads up his ass over the course of a single year. Although not strictly a bugchaser, at one point he describes sex with an obviously HIV+ partner as extremely hot. Gay porn began to cater for the highly niche market of bugchasing with the 1998 launch of the controversial San Francisco production company Treasure Island Media. Known among some gay circles as basically AIDS porn, Treasure Island's all-bareback output usually involves disease-riddled manwhores sharing their sickness with each other.

image But as far as fiction goes, Bug Chaser might be the first ever cinematic work centered around this truly bizarre and unsavoury kink. Though that's a little unfairly misleading on my part, because there's no homos ravenously drooling over immunodefiency viruses here. Instead, what we got here is a nifty and demented body horror short, disturbing enough on a directly visual level, but even more disturbing if you pick up on the layer of subtext. That's why I gave the unnecessary intro on the in-and-outs of bugchasing, because I want you to get the most out of this film. Also because I delight in introducing y'all to odious sexual concepts that you'd probably prefer to not know about. I'm kind of a dick like that. emoticon

We start with 2 dudes arriving at a fancy apartment for a night of vigorous, anonymous sex. Tongues are thrust in mouths. Shirts come off. Pectoral muscles are sensuously caressed. Penises are released from the strains of their undergarmentary prisons. It's all pretty darn gay. But when one of our donut-punchers drops down for some salad-tossing action, he discovers a rather revolting, bulbous growth on the other shirt-lifter's poop chute. If that weren't gross enough, the anal growth becomes increasingly larger and more painful over the following day. And that's all the plot you're getting from me.

Special mention must go to Brendan Shucart in the main role. His performance as the hapless butt-tumour bearing homo is shameless and fearless. Barely a single scene passes without him providing image some full-frontal or full-dorsal nudity. I would say that homophobes will find this movie unappealing, but considering most shots of Shucart's bum involve a giant bulbous, pustulous boil on his chocolate starfish, I'd say even the most ass-crazy women and gay dudes will struggle to find anything appealing. Make no mistake, despite the rampant nudity, there is some pretty damn sick shit here. Enough to make even extreme horror fiends say to themselves, "Damn, that's some pretty sick shit!"

Of the small handful of reviews I've read for this short, the main complaint seems to be the ending, some calling it lousy and trite. I couldn't disagree more. The quiet finale is where it goes from being a mere grossout to fully embracing the extent of Cronenbergian body horror. Where bodily mutations are merely a physical manifestation of dark psychological trauma. Where the visceral and cerebral combine.

image So if you wanna see bugchasing, then... well, you should probably skip this and go straight for Dawson's 50 Load Weekend (2005), The 1000 Load Fuck (2009) or Viral Loads (2014). But if you're keen for a twisted and demented horror short with brains, guts and plenty of cock, then Bug Chaser is more than worth the 19 minutes you'll spend watching it. Believe it or not, it's even more entertaining than letting an HIV+ dude blast a load of pathogenic spunk up your shithole.

A horror movie about rape

Rape is bad. It's very bad. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. But I'll gladly wish it upon hundreds of fictional characters, because why the hell not, they're not real, and they're not me, so what's the harm?
Now you might think I'm a tad odd, but chances are, if you clicked on this thread, you're just like me, and would also secretly enjoy watching random chicks being rammed for no good reason whatsoever. Just like you enjoy watching fictional peeps being gutted and decapitated all damn day, this is the Horror Board after all! So for all you sick freaks out there who clicked on this thread, you might just be interested in my thoughts on the latest perverted little horror rape flick I got my hands on, titled simply;

The Hospital (2014).

Not exactly a standout title. Had I called my thread, The Hospital, no one would have batted an eye lid my direction, or if they did, they probably wouldn't have been my intended audience, so I figured I'd be more descriptive. So yeah, rape. Rape rape, rape. That's what's this movie is about. But I suppose I should go into more detail for you. Here we go.

An old abandoned hospital is rumoured to be haunted. A group or paranormal enthusiasts go visit it to see what they find. Meanwhile, the hospital is watched by a very fat man who likes the rape people. And rape people. And rape people. There's so much rape in this movie it's beautiful.

image

Okay, so that's the basic synopsis, without me giving too much away. So, is the movie any good?

No. No it's not. This movie is so bad. So very, very bad. But, that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable! So don't stop reading just yet.

This movie is well made. Decent production values, a decent sized cast, good lighting and pretty entertaining script, it even has a score made for the movie, so it's got a lot going for it.
Where it falls down, is the acting is bad. Very bad. This movie isn't self aware either, it's actually trying to be a good movie. So the bad acting kinda take you out of it. This movie could have been a masterpiece, unfortunately, I was pretty annoyed with the two main antagonists (not gonna spoil who they are). They came across as a bit too energetic and hyper. It made them look less menacing, and more like excited children who would throw tantrums every now and then.
The sounding was also very off, and the special effects are worse. This movie actually made me think of a mean spirited version of Birdemic. Those effects were so bad. So very bad. The ending especially, oh dear.

Now that's a lot of negativity, but where I praise it, is.....wait for it...the rape scenes! Never thought I'd be saying this, but the rape scenes in this movie are awesome. It's basically the only reason to watch this film. And come on, I know you all want to see a fat rapist raping a fat chick, so don't deny it!
So, here's where this movie gets interesting. The rape scenes really aren't justified. There is no excuse for the blatant repeat of abuse. The women in it being constantly degraded and recycled for the viewer to watch. Scenes like necrophilia and sodomy, none of it is necessary. This is one of the reasons why many people hated it. Feminists and such calling shenanigans on the blatant abuse of women. Well this is the main reason why I loved it! The filmmakers didn't come up with a reason for the abuse, they just thought, 'why the hell not'! As a woman, I'm here to say....there's nothing wrong with that. Come one, we're all horror fans, we all love seeing people die in horrible ways. That doesn't make us bad people, just people with very active imaginations. We don't need a reason to justify us being gorehounds, why should rape be any different? Even A Serbian Film used justification of it all being a metaphor, but nah, The Hospital has nothing! Just rape. Rape, rape, rape. The filmmakers have balls, I'll give them that.

As ballsy as this movie is, it's still, technically, a bad movie. But I enjoyed it. I was particularly fond of the only decent actor in the whole thing, Daniel Emery Taylor, who played our fat rapist. Just look at this guy, doesn't he just look like the best rapist, he's even got the pedo tash going on!

image

My only complaint, is that guy doesn't get fully naked nearly as much as I would like. We see plenty of tits, but so little of this guys fat arse. Tragic, really. No need to be shy, you're in a horror movie dammit!

Many thanks to Ninjas for this movie, if anyone is interested in watching it, beware of the very heavily edited version online, some cutting out as much as 20 mins from the movie, which I can only assume are the very best bits. I checked out the uncut version on veehd, so enjoy, you sick freaks!

As always, thanks for reading,

Walking Toilet Bowl (1990)

I'm not made squeamish very easily. When it comes to watching anything on a tv/computer screen, it almost never phases me. But it does happen. Most recently when I watched a scat porno called Walking Toilet Bowl. It was pretty much what I expected. But I didn't expect it to be so... I don't know. fucked up, I guess. Anyway. I have officially been phased.

image I'm not a huge fan of porn of any kind, but intrigued by all that is extreme and/or fucked up. But this shit is officially too much. So, Jamie Gillis (of Water Power fame) has put out a number scat fetish porno flicks which seem to put an emphasis on the degredation of women. This particular woman was given the luxury of having a drink before enduring the atrocities which lie before her. And I can say with all honesty that she needed it. The look on Carol's face from the very beginning is proof of that.

Mr. Gillis starts off by whipping this woman's ass and pussy as a warm up. He then convinces his lady friend to get off the motel room bed and come over to him and get on her hands and knees and lick his shoes. The bottom of his shoes, which he claims has dog shit on them. I assume he's not kidding. Carol seems to be pretty miserable right off the bat, doing a poor job of acting enthused. She lays on the floor and touches herself while Mr. Gillis hocks loogies on her and in her mouth all the while berating her for being a toilet bowel. Carol is not pleased by this. Nor is she pleased when he starts punching her in the ass and slapping her in the face. Yet, she still seems very hungry for balls. Her hunger would not last.

image And finally, Mr. Gillis takes a big fat shit all over Carol's chest. which is actually when this shit finally starts getting good. She lays on the floor, crying while he stands over her and masturbates, ordering her to do stuff with his shit. Such as rub it all over herself, On her crotch, in her vagina, and yes. In her mouth. She actually managed to suck down a turd or two. As miserable as this poor woman seemed, there is a point where she apparently snaps and starts laughing hysterically at what was going on. The laughter would not last, however.

She would then be forced to suck on poopy-dildo, and rub shit all over her teeth and use what was left as lipstick. She's informed that she's allowed to throw up if she needs to, but miraculously never does. Even the inevitable salad tossing wasn't enough to make her toss her cookies. Kinda dissappointing, yet, equally impressive. All I know is, This chick must have needed the (crack) money really, really bad! This is true bottom the of the barrel porn. For men who hate women and love shit only! 1/10

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Ahhh, it's about time I tacked this movie. This iconic masterpiece. For many years I wanted to see this legendary movie. My love for controversial films had me noticing this flick mentioned time and time again. By this point, I was dabbling with the extreme and notorious, and this movie was always on my radar, but always out of reach. Back when I was in my teens, downloading movies was such a foreign concept to me, and this movie was still banned in Australia. Curse you, damn Aussie censors! Curse you all!!!!

image

Fortunately, the ban lifted in 2005, but I was still unable to locate a copy, and was too cheap to pay the $50 it cost from my local video shop, so alas, me seeing the legendary Cannibal Holocaust wasn't to be.
Until one fateful day when I in my room, minding my own business, when my father came in with a whole stack of movies.

"My mate at work just gave me all these flicks he obtained, there's some horrors in there if you're interested".

He left them on my bedside table, and out he went. I hobbled over and gave them a skim. Every time my dad's mate gave him movies, they were usually very mainstream, or just really lame, but I'll never knock back free movies, so what the hell!

As I flicked through them, my eyes caught hold of the all so famous cover of Cannibal Holocaust. I couldn't believe it. Cannibal Holocaust! I finally had it in my hands, and my own father had delivered it to me!!!
I love my dad.

image

What proceeded next would only secure my love for exploitation and extreme cinema. I had already seen Irreversible at this point, but not much else when it came to extreme cinema. But here was a movie that was argued to have been banned almost everywhere, had the director taken to court, and featured on almost every '˜most disturbing list' ever made. I couldn't wait to watch it.

This movie follows a rescue crew who travel into the Amazon, looking for a documentary crew who went missing. Directed by Ruggero Deodato, this amazing piece of cinema was not the first cannibal exploitation flick, in fact, quite a few had already been made by this point, but it's certainly the most well known. There is a reason for this. Cannibal exploitation flicks are either made with comedic overtone, or gritty and tribal atmosphere. Cannibal Holocaust went the latter route, and made it as grimy and unsettling as possible. Using various filming techniques, including the shaky cam, which would later become very successful film making, Deodato created a very voyeuristic flick which tacked some very important concepts, such as the ethical consequences of journalism, and the state of humanity when faced with greed. Add to that, the very taboo scenes of graphic brutality, sexual violence, and genuine violence toward animals, and you have one fucked up movie. And one marvellous movie at that.

image

After it was first shown in Italy, Deodato was arrested and charged with making a snuff film because people believed the actors were actually killed on camera. Idiots. Deodato was later cleared but the film was banned in almost everywhere after it. And so begins its notoriety. When will the censors learn, if you don't want someone to see something, don't ban it, you'll only get it more attention. Idiots!

One of the most iconic things about this movie, is the score. Probably one of my favourite scores I have ever heard in any movie, it switches between that beautiful melody coupled with the gorgeous scenery, and an unsettling creepiness which could unnerve you completely during the disturbing scenes. The music really helped to establish an atmosphere. No doubt it helped to make it as memorable as it is today. And those iconic disturbing shots, as well as the disturbing ending, no doubt pushed so many boundaries for us cinema lovers, horror exploitation fans will forever rejoice for seeing realistic looking carnage.

image

One thing I should say, as much as I love this movie, and all the cannibal exploitation movies, the animal killings does bother me some. While it certainly adds to the gritty and voyeuristic feel of the movie, it really didn't add anything for me personally. I tend to fast forward these scenes myself, being the animal lover that I am. However, I certainly won't boycott these movies for it and pretend I don't eat meat. But I do wish the animal killings were faked. Oh well, such is life.

If you haven't seen Cannibal Holocaust, watch it now! For the pure reason that it's one of those movies you just have to see. If the animal violence does go against your morals, there are copies which feature an animal cruelty free version. But this movie is rated highly for a reason. Long live cannibal exploitation!

Thankyou.

Irreversible (2002)

When I was just a little girl, my dad would take me to the local video shop to rent movies. There was this discount where you could get seven weeklies for seven dollars, and being the cheap movie buffs that we were, we would go nuts and spend ages finding movies to watch. Naturally I was always in the horror section and the foreign section, cos I had an inkling the foreigners knew how to make scary movies. By this point, I was already an established horror fan, but still an extreme movie virgin. The most brutal thing I had seen at this point was Braindead. Oh how I was naïve once....

image

Then, one fateful day, my sweet innocent 16 year old self came across a title I had seen mentioned on the Horror board before. A title I had seen mentioned on many DISTURBING lists. Oh how these lists intrigued me. Horror movies in general intrigued me, cos horror was always forbidden. But the extreme and disturbing horror movies were like the cream on top, the taboo fruit that one mustn't touch. But oh how I wanted to touch. I wanted to know everything about these disturbing movies, even if I was too chicken to watch them myself. But here I stood in this video shop, holding in my hand the one, the only, Gasper Noe's Irreversible!

image

I had heard the infamy surrounding this title, with a rape scene rumoured to last ten minutes, and an opening with frequency sounds meant to incite nausea. The cover depicting a pretty girl walking into an ominous, red tunnel, the title in huge backwards letters, and a warning splattered on the front, saying it may cause epilepsy. I knew this was no ordinary movie.

My eyes then turned to the R rating at the bottom. For you Americans on board, our R is like your NC17, not something a 16 year old could easily pull off from her loving father. Next to the rating, the words "RESTRICTED TO ADULTS: High level sexual violence, graphic violence, sexual activity! Nice!

image

I must have this movie, I thought! This was it! My chance to finally jump in the deep end! I was finally gonna check out something really scary. Something really fucked up. I snuck it in between some other random horror movies, in the same way a perv would hide a porno mag in between a house keeping mag and a Cosmopolitan, in the efforts hoping my dad would only skim through them when I handed them to him. Alas, as I did, he went through them thoroughly. Naturally his eyes narrowed when he came across Irreversible. Fuck!

"What's this?" father asked me, his eyes still narrow, as he turned it around and examined the back contents.

"Um.....it's just a horror movie". I said, playing dumb, like I had no idea how graphic the movie was meant to be.

"This doesn't seem suitable for you" said my father. Yeah, I can watch a man mow down zombies with a lawn mower into mush, but this is too much. Stupid logic! Of course I didn't say such things to him, I wanted him to let me have the movie. So I put on my best innocent doggy eyes, and explained how it's meant to be "really, really good, I heard so on imdb". My dad's eyes were still narrow. He didn't say a thing for like 30 seconds, which was completely unnecessary as I waited for his reply in annoying anticipation. Finally....

"Okay, we'll get it.... (FUCK YEAH!) but...... I want to watch it first to make sure it's appropriate".

image

I've never been much of an actor, it was hard to hide my disappointment, but without hesitation I replied "yeah no worries, let me know your thoughts!" Secretly though, I was crushed. If the rumours I had heard about the movie were true, he wouldn't get half an hour in before telling me I was out of my goddamn head. Dammit father!!!

All the way back home in the car, I contemplated how I was to thwart my father's efforts of being a good dad. Dammit I had to see the movie before him, but how?!

Well someone out there likes me, because it just so happens that that particular day, was Good Friday. As soon as we got home, my dad told me to get ready to see my grandmother, who was preparing a catholic lunch for my family. Aha! Perfect! Once my dad eats a massive meal, he'll wanna go to sleep, which will leave me free to watch Irreversible in my room completely uninterrupted! Ahaha! Hahahahhaahhahaha!

The day unfolded exactly as I thought it would, a couple of hours later we were home, and my parents were knocked out from lunch. Victory! Sweet, sweet victory! Oh so I thought. If only I knew what Pandora box I was opening. This was my first dabble into the extreme. And it has stayed with me ever since.

image

I talk big about extreme movies, I have seen far more sick and vulgar stuff since then, but at sweet 16, never had I seen anything so brutal, so traumatising, so scarring. Irreversible devastated me. It made me cry, it made me sick, it made me convinced that if I went to a party, I'd get raped and die and it would be horrible, which explains my lack of social skills as a teen. What's more, I couldn't get the movie out of my head. The head bashing, the rape, the tragic love story, the failed revenge, I couldn't get any of it out of my head. So many questions, so many ideas and concepts. The man that observed her being raped and did nothing, the dream where she saw the whole thing, the change of consistency with the tone of the movie, the backwards story telling. Everything stayed with me long after the movie was over. And it's because of that, that I highly recommend this movie.

image

This is why we watch cinema. Irreversible is an experience. It's not a pleasant one, it's a sickening one, it's one that will probably make you sick, probably make you cry, and probably depress you long after it's finished, but by God is it a damn good movie. I thought I would never rewatch it, but years later, I am 23, and I regard it as one of the best movies I have ever seen. Rewatched it multiple times and it still has the same effect on me as it did day one all those years ago.

Many movies that end up on disturbing lists sometimes only go for shock value, this is not the case here. The way the movie unfolds is a build up to the ending, which is actually the beginning, as the movie is told in reverse. As calm as the ending is, it's also shockingly beautiful and depressing at the same time. You know the future of the characters, even if they do not. What's more, these are real characters, just like you or me. The final shot has our protagonist fade into the background, just like another extra. Just like us. This movie really struck a chord with me.

Don't misunderstand my story, this is not the most disturbing movie ever made, and if you treat it as such, you may find yourself disappointed. All that comes down to personal preference and taste. There are far more fucked up movies in this extreme zone right now, but for me, this will always be my number one. My most disturbing movie ever. Nothing will ever come close to it. Irreversible left a scar in my psyche that can never be undone. Many apologies for the cliché, but never has a title been so accurate. Once you watch Irreversible, it cannot be reversed. But despite it all, I wouldn't chance a thing. Had I never watched Irreversible, my love for extreme and disturbing horror may have never been established. I wouldn't be the horror fan I am today. The movie may have traumatised me, but I will forever be greatful for it.

Thankyou for reading.

They All Must Die! (1998)

image One of my favourite sub genres in horror is rape and revenge. There's just something so inspiring watching a chick who was previously a victim, kick the shit out of the men that assaulted her. Among this sub genre, you'll find classics like;
I Spit on your Grave, Last House on the Left, Thriller: A Cruel Picture, Ms. 45 and I'll Never Die Alone. These excellent movies for the most part follow a simple formula. We follow a likable protagonist who gets fucked over. We then watch her fuck everyone else over. Must contain a harrowing rape scene and a fucked up revenge scene. That's what these movies are all about, right? A simple formula. So how did They All Must Die! manage to fuck it up?!

Directed by Sean Weathers, a man I know nothing about, They All Must Die! plays like a black version of I Spit on your Grave. Literally, it's essentially the same exact movie, only our rapists are from the ghetto, and it's set in New York City. Oh and our protagonist is a bitch. So already, you can see this movie isn't really setting itself up right. We're supposed to like the victim, that's why we feel bad when she gets raped, and we cheer when she grows some balls. But this chick is just unlikeable. So full of herself. It's hard to sympathise with someone like looks like this.

image

Not the most flattering picture of her, but still much more flattering then the cover. She's come all the way to New York to write a novel about black guys, or something. And gets annoyed when black guys hit on her. Which one does almost immediately. Cue our would be rapists.

image

Now these three losers see her move in and right off the bat, two of them just yell shit at her. Not trying to win her affections or anything, just trying to sound as 'gangsta' as possible. Saying stuff like;

"Yo........snowflake! If you aint ever been to the ghetto.......don't ever come to the ghetto. Cos...you wouldn't even understand the ghetto! So stay the fuck out of the ghetto!"

Oh. Are you guys in the ghetto? I'm glad you mentioned it, cos I wouldn't have noticed. Especially since it just looks like a regular street in New York City. And it's just the three of you losers and no one else. Yeah, they seem like real thugs alright. One looks like a 14 year old kid, who proclaims he's a virgin, and would rather be one than "eat pussy". Whatever the hell that means.
We got one that's skinny and who's too chicken shit to actually have sex with the chick, given the chance. And we got the big one, who runs over to her and flirts with her immediately. The big one actually does a pretty decent job at trying to win her affections in being friendly and welcoming. But remember, our chick is a bitch, so she'll reject him, more than once, after all, she's only here to write a book called "America through the Eyes of a Black Man". And who better knows America through the eyes of a black man, then a single white chick!

Well, after half the movie of trying to win over her affections and failing, the boys decide to actually act like thugs, and invade her house and rape her. And truth be told, it's the only good part of the whole movie. Lasting for about 20 mins, it's pretty damn uncomfortable and cringeworthy. But kinda annoying after a while too, both hearing our victim screaming a lot, and hearing the rapists talk shit the entire time and trying to sound tough. It would have been more effective if you actually liked the main girl. Oh well.

Unfortunately, the rape scene seems to be the only reason to see this movie. Everything leading up to it is boring and repetitive, and the revenge scenes after leave much to be desired. For a rape revenge film, there was shockingly little violence, and no gore. I find that very disappointing. The movie has the words BANNED on the cover, and there's no gore? Impossible! This whole movie is a tease!

image

Speaking of the cover, it's chock full of warnings and declaimers. Of course it is. The only thing offensive about this movie is the rape scene, but even that goes for too long and becomes almost boring at a point. This movie has heart, and wants to be as disturbing as possible. But it's far too obnoxious. While the rape scene tries to be disturbing, what's more offensive is the blatant splicing in of random lynching photos. I have no idea why these images are spliced in, but watch it for long enough and you'll noticed these images popping up for a mini second.

There's no musical score in this, much like I Spit on your Grave. But where I Spit had the peaceful tranquillity of nature and scenery, this movie has NYC. And bad actors pretending they're thugs. This movie plays out like some horror fans got a camera and asked their friends to improvise a movie. That's how low budget it is. So for the most part, it's a very decent effort. And pretty offensive and racist enough to raise some eyebrows. But too boring and obnoxious to be anything special.

4/10

Children of the Dark (2008)

As horror fans, we are used to seeing graphic and bloody depictions. That stuff is just common place in this day and age. But even the most jaded horror fan will still squirm uncomfortably whenever children are depicted as being abused, both physically and sexually. That kinda stuff is just too taboo, especially if the scenes happen to be graphic. Children of the Dark isn't a horror movie, but is just about as horrifying as anything you could see.

A Japanese journalist investigates illegal organ trafficking in Thailand, and finds himself in a world that's connected with pedophiles and the mafia. Those who know me know I'm no stranger to anything disturbing or fucked up. But even movies like A Serbian Film haven't desensitised me to child abuse. And the child abuse scenes in this movie are brutal. If a movie like Mysterious Skin was too much for you, stay away from this one. I put this on par with the movie Silenced (2011). Though the abuse scenes are not frequent, when they do happen, it's enough to make your skin crawl. Even some scenes where no abuse is occurring is exceptionally daring and provoking. Seeing children riddled with AIDS and thrown out in the rubbish is about as grim and depressing as it comes. This is not a feel good movie. This is bleak, dark and important film making.

image

Despite the very disturbing subject matter, this movie is pretty well made. The acting, the cinematography, the atmosphere and the script was all top notch. It's not perfect, I'll make that clear. It goes for over two hours, which was overly long imo. The editing and flow of the movie could have also used a bit more work, and the ending, while incredibly shocking, felt like it came out of nowhere. But the story is strong, and brings up several different ethical concepts. How ethical is it for a journalist to stand by and allow a victim to suffer, all for the glory of the story? Does the cycle of abuse generate any sympathy for a perpetrator who used to be a victim? Would you allow an innocent child to die to save your own? I can see many people debating this movie after they see it. And it's movies that do that, that cause such an impact on the viewer, that succeed where many other movies are often forgotten. I can guarantee that anyone who watches this movie will not forget it soon after. And that is a victory for the filmmakers. Even if it did get pulled from the Bangkok International Film Festival, it still makes its statements loud and clearly.

Anyone who has a penchant for fucked up cinema, will no doubt find this movie something to their interests. But don't expect to enjoy this movie. It's not one that can be easily enjoyed. Instead it shows you the darker side of humanity in an unflinching portrayal. If you want to be disturbed, you've come to the right place.
